Tired of being Intimidated by "Complicated" Technology?

Because as I read deeper into that reality, I knew I wasn't going to tackle the necessary tech tasks, for three reasons: 

• My computer and smart device set ups & configurations came out NOTHING like the examples in the service providers website (I called them “samples”, but they really were just failures)
• It would take me way longer to create than instructions said they should.
• It wouldn’t work because I'd see steps in the instructions that seemed tedious, and skip through them altogether (“clear your cache & cookies? NOPE”).

A few years ago I was listening to a podcast where entrepreneurs & business owners competed to create their best tech and business strategies against one another which then got judged by professional technology celebrity geeks.

As one of the contestants frantically worked to finish her platform on time. The “celebrity judge” snidely remarked:

“My 3 year old has better tech skills than you”.

In that moment, I realized two things:

First, that either he's a jerk, or producers told him to act like one.

And second, that my “tech skills” - although I never thought of them in that way - were exactly like hers!

I have to be honest: even though they were directed at some lady I'd never met, the judges’ comments made me feel pretty bad about myself. Despite the fact that I like doing things on my computer, I was a complete amateur when it came to tech skills- especially virtual tech skills.

I'll always remember that moment as the one when I decided to do something about it.

And I'm glad I did.

Because it made me realize all of those fears working on my computer or smart devices - about my programs, set ups and configurations not coming out right or working correctly, about everything taking too long - had nothing to do with me not being a great computer guru... it had everything to do with my tech skills.

After years of working on my tech skills, and lots of trial and error, I'm more confident in this tech arena than ever.

I see tech protocols that call for complicated use of data, did someone call for an automated email campaign? - or linking an appointment calendar to automatically set up a zoom meeting, and I'll just smile and say, “bring it on “.

It's made working from home SO much more fun, and the look on my friends faces when they see me conduct business from anywhere I happen to be, is priceless.

“I didn't know you were such a tech head!”

(I’m not, of course. I've just learned to use technology like one).
It may seem like a trivial thing, but I can honestly say that developing great tech skills has changed my life.

And if you've ever been frustrated by how long a digital workplace takes to create, or backed down from virtual technology because you were intimidated by it, or felt bad that you couldn't impress your co-workers, partners or employees with a perfectly functioning virtual platform, then it can change your life, too.

But I'll be honest... it took me a LONG time, and I made a lot of mistakes along the way.

It took dozens of tech skill classes, from local workshops and seminars to multiple 5 thousand to 6 thousand dollar courses.

I read every book and watched every YouTube video I could get my hands on.

I even hired professional “tech geeks” to coach me for several multi-day sessions.

And while I've learned an incredible amount, I've also come to understand something: it doesn't have to be that complicated.

Out of everything I've learned, only a few things - less than 10% - really matter when I step into my home or mobile office every day.

All of that training was a great way to satisfy my curiosity, and perhaps prep me for the IT career I'll never have ... but as someone who just wants to be more confident in the tech sector of my everyday life and business?

It was too much.

The problem is that no one offers to teach you those few key things, and only those few key things.

To really master tech skills to work at home or take your business virtual, if you choose, you will either have to spend a ton of time or a ton of money (or both) learning more than you need to, and then try to parse it for what's truly important.
